Eleven ways of writing a date and one of them is 03/04/26

redwing is 212 documents off six insurers and about forty repairers, so the formatting is whatever each office does and nobody has ever been asked to agree. **what is actually in there** n=904 date strings, pulled by hand. Counts below, and yes, some of these are the same date typed twice by two people in the same file. | written as | count | |---|---| | 12/03/2026 | 318 | | 12/03/26 | 141 | | 12 March 2026 | 96 | | 12 Mar 2026 | 88 | | March 12, 2026 | 61 | | 2026-03-12 | 54 | | 12.03.2026 | 47 | | 12/3/26 | 39 | | 12th March 2026 | 26 | | Mar-12-26 | 19 | | 120326 | 15 | Ten of those eleven i do not care about. Anything with a day >= 13 resolves itself, and the ones carrying a written month are unambiguous whichever office typed them. **the one that matters** 61 of the 904 are all numeric with both parts under 13, so both readings are a real date. 03/04/26 is the third of April or the fourth of March and the document does not say which. 24 of the 61 have no second date anywhere on the page to anchor against, no letterhead giving you a country, no policy reference with a year in it. There is nothing in the file. I have looked at all 24. **what it does with them** It picks one and writes it out in full as though it read it somewhere. Same document, two runs, and on 9 of the 24 it picked differently. It has not once said the string was ambiguous, in any wording i have tried. An incident date landing a month out changes whether the policy was live, so this is not a tidiness thing. I want the 24 back marked so a person sees them, and the other 880 back as ISO with nobody touching them. About 9 pounds and a morning of my life on the format census, which i did in a spreadsheet like an animal.

Problem Instructions

Normalise the date strings to ISO without resolving the ones that cannot be resolved. The 24 all numeric strings with nothing on the page to anchor them have to come back for a person to look at.

  • The other 880 come back as ISO and match the census I pulled by hand.
  • None of the 24 unanchored ones gets written out as a single date. Both readings come back, or a flag does.
  • Same document twice gives the same output on all 61 of the ambiguous ones. It picked differently on 9 of 24 last time.
